Henderson County Veterans
Memorial & Plaza

The East Texas Arboretum completed construction of the Henderson County Veterans Memorial and Plaza at the Arboretum facility on Patterson Road in Athens in 2013. The Memorial  honors military veterans who enlisted in Henderson County or were natives of Henderson County and enlisted elsewhere.  The memorial is two red brick curved walls located within an open plaza with a bronze eagle sculpture overlooking the plaza. Names of veterans are engraved on granite panels embedded in the memorial walls.

An extensive research effort by volunteers identified names of veterans from Henderson County who served beginning with the Civil War to the present. Advertisements in area newspapers asking for public help in identifying those who served was part of the search. Veterans and their families were asked to respond to the request. Current lists of veterans who qualify are posted on the Arboretum website: easttexasarboretum.org.
The Henderson County Veterans Memorial will forever recognize the contribution of veterans who served to protect and preserve freedom for all Americans. The East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and relies on Annual Arboretum Memberships, private contributions, donations, entrance fees and facilities rentals for 100% of the annual operating budget. Contributions are appreciated and very important for the Arboretum.

Questions concerning the memorial wall may be directed to 903-675-5630.

Lists of those who served in specific wars and conflicts can be found on this website.  If you or someone you know served our country and are from Henderson County or enlisted in Henderson County, please use the Submission Form to submit their name for verification and addition to the wall.

The United States Military consists of five active-duty Services and their respective Guard and Reserve units. All branches are equal parts of the United States Uniformed Services, headed by the President as Commander in Chief.  The Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense (DoD). The Coast Guard reports to the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and to the DoD (by way of the Navy) during wartime.

Reserve and National Guard units perform as active-duty service members on a part-time basis. These troops train close to home, deploying when needed to aid in international conflict or domestic disaster relief.
